As near as Can Be

“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the supplication of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me that they may be guided.”
[Al-Qur’an 2:186]

Indeed I am near. Quran verse translation. Quranic interpretation. a verse a day

Often today, in a world as busy as ours, as we face disaster and let downs, a feeling of helplessness engulfs us. We begin to feel like nothing and nobody can help us. And that nothing can bring it all back, can make things better.

In only the second chapter of the Quran, long as it may be, God promises us Himself, that He remains the closest Entity to us. To me. To you. To each one of us. This verse was received by Prophet Mohammad, after having being asked by his companions on how to supplicate to God. Is He distant for us to cry out loud ? Or will He know what it is we whisper in our hearts ? To which God replied as such.

In this verse, God talks about being close to each one of us, closeness in two ways :

  1. That He knows what we carry in our hearts. He does not require the physical act of being asked for something, to know what we desire. He knows when we need Him the most, and He promises us to be there in our times of despair. Closeness in how we seek Him and His awareness of it.
  2. Closeness in His response. For nothing else responds to us better than God Himself. Indeed He is the best responder of all.

To me, I chose this aayah as I choose all the others, simply because I like it. And what I like the most about this verse is that it only reinstates what most of us hope for – That God really IS listening to everything we say. This verse has helped me on more than one occssion. When I have felt helpless and alone, somehow a callout cloud has come right over me with these words inside it (I can get a little dramatic when sad). No one else offers a deeper sense of gratification than knowing that the best of hearers is hearing you out.

Think of God as constant. The only distance between you, is the one YOU decide to create.
